New York Giants insider claims team hired Brian Daboll despite reputation of ‘volatility’ in previous stops

It seems the recent stories about New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll’s growing issues with his coaching staff may be a situation the organization likely knew was possible when they hired him two years ago.

The Giants are in the early stages of their offseason but they are battling some drama inside the organization. During the season there was rumbling of a schism between their head coach and former defensive coordinator Don “Wink’ Martindale. That seemed to be confirmed when the veteran coordinator resigned in frustration earlier this month.

However, recent reports have revealed that the issues with Martindale were just one of many problems between Daboll and his coaching staff. The Giants head coach reportedly has developed a reputation with his staff as a man who likes to hand out blame and avoid accountability for the team’s failures.

It has even led some on the coaching staff to allegedly warn outside coaches to avoid taking jobs under the former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator.

While the revelations were shocking to New York fans, it’s apparently nothing new to many around the NFL. This week, SNY NFL reporter Connor Hughes revealed that during stops as an offensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills, Brian Daboll had developed a poor reputation that cost him head coach opportunities in recent years.

“I talked to people that knew there were issues in Cleveland when he was an offensive coordinator there. The same volatility and heatedness,” Hughes said during an appearance on NY radio station WFAN. “Remember, Daboll went through several coaching cycles before he got his job. There were some of those issues that turned up in those coaching cycles and coaching interviews, and they wanted him to address those.

“And he didn’t address them overly well in some of those interviews, which is why those teams passed on him despite his success in Buffalo.”

Hughes claimed the ongoing situation with the coaching could continue to “deteriorate” and may lead to offensive coordinator Mike Kafka taking the same job with another team to avoid being a continued focus of Daboll’s verbal attacks.
