Giants’ GM Sounds Off On Daniel Jones’ Future

When the New York Giants handed Daniel Jones a four-year, $160 million contract extension last offseason, they did it with the expectation that he would be their clear long-term answer at quarterback.

Based on the year Jones had in 2022, who could blame them?

Giants’ GM Sounds Off On Daniel Jones’ Future

However, Jones was a massive disappointment in the first season of his new deal, as he made just six starts and threw two touchdowns and six interceptions before tearing his ACL.

As a result of Jones’ poor performance and injury, many have surmised that the Giants will go in a different direction under center heading into 2024, but as of right now, general manager Joe Schoen says the team plans on sticking with Jones.

“Where we are, we’re in a good spot at [pick] six, we’re gonna look at every position we have needs across the board, offensively and defensively,’’ Schoen said, via Paul Schwartz of The New York Post. “Daniel’s in the building every day working hard. The expectation is for him to be the starter when he’s healthy going into camp and we’re gonna be thorough with our process at every position during the draft, regardless whether it’s quarterback, running back, safety, corner, whatever it is. We’ll take a good player at six.’’

Schoen was referencing the fact that New York owns the sixth overall pick in this spring’s NFL Draft. The general consensus is that the Giants will take a quarterback, and while Schoen did give Jones the starting nod for now, he did say that drafting a signal-caller is not off the table.

Jones, who played his collegiate football at Duke, was selected by New York with the sixth overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.

He showed some promise early on, but Jones’ career has largely been marked by inconsistency thus far.

We’ll see if Daniel Jones can rebound next season.
