Quarterback Sam Hartman wasn’t picked in the NFL Draft but has landed a major deal with a team all the same.

The former Wake Forest and Notre Dame QB was signed by the Washington Commanders following the draft on Saturday and is set to make more money than the typical undrafted free agent.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the signal-caller has been signed to a contract that will pay him a base salary of $225,000 plus a signing bonus of $20,000.

The #Commanders gave former Notre Dame QB Sam Hartman one of the biggest guarantees among undrafted free agents: a $20,000 signing bonus and $225,000 base salary guarantee,” Pelissero reported. “A sign Hartman is in Washington’s plans for 2024.

While it’s still far from the $1.025 million and $80,732 signing bonus a seventh-round pick would receive, it’s still a whole lot for an undrafted free agent.

Sam Hartman Won’t Get Much Playing Time With The Washington Commanders In 2024

Sam Hartman should be pleased with himself, as the numbers indicate the Commanders aren’t simply signing him as a summer placeholder. However, the team drafted Jayden Daniels as the No. 2 overall pick, so he shouldn’t expect much action in 2024.

Daniels could take the starting job from Marcus Mariota; that’s left to time to tell. In any case, Hartman is unlikely to see the field in any significant capacity, barring injuries.

It’s also worth noting that the NFC outfit added veterans Jeff Driskel and Jake Fromm this offseason.

Hartman threw for 2,689 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions for Notre Dame, having passed for 77 scores in his final two seasons at Wake Forest before his transfer to the Fighting Irish.

Hartman, 24, is a year older than former Commanders starter Sam Howell and is just one year younger than Fromm.
