This was a historic coaching change cycle in the NFL. No less than eight vacancies opened up this offseason and even going into the final part of last season. With names available like Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll, we may never see another cycle like this one anytime soon.

One of the hottest names on the market was Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald.

Cross town rival Washington was interested in Macdonald after conducting interviews and after Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson removed his name from consideration. But Macdonald wanted the Seahawks’ job.

The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec recently posted on X about Macdonald’s decision:

“Harbaugh said that team would have loved to keep DC Mike Macdonald, but Macdonald really wanted the Seattle job. Didn’t feel like there was anything team could do to keep him.”

And fans in Seattle appear to be appreciative, welcoming Macdonald to town with open arms.

Macdonald obviously chose the Seahawks over the Commanders for undisclosed reasons, some of which might be obvious to some fans. The Seattle franchise seems much more stable, although with the ownership change in D.C. a culture change is certainly on the doorstep.

The Commanders instead announced former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator and Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn as their new coach, but Washington fans seem less than thrilled.

What could be worse for Commanders fans is the fact that Quinn appears to have been the team’s third choice for the job behind Johnson and Macdonald. Another kick in the gut for Commanders fans who have had a long history of gut kicks.
