Bears Looking To Sign Major Pass-Rusher In Free Agency

The Chicago Bears orchestrated a significant trade by acquiring Montez Sweat from the Washington Commanders. However, their ambitions don’t stop with Sweat alone.

Chicago secured Sweat with a lucrative four-year, $98 million contract extension. Despite this sizable commitment, the Bears find themselves in a favorable financial position, boasting the tenth-highest salary cap space in the league as they approach the 2024 season, with just under $50 million to spend.

Bears Looking To Sign Major Pass-Rusher In Free Agency

Some voices within the NFL community speculate that Chicago might aim to add Montez Sweat’s former teammate, Chase Young, during free agency, as reported by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

While Montez Sweat joined the Bears through a trade, Chase Young was traded to the San Francisco 49ers before the deadline.

In the 2023 season, spanning 16 games, Young showcased his prowess with 25 tackles, 15 quarterback hits, and 7.5 sacks. Currently, Young and the 49ers are poised to compete for the NFC Championship.

Montez Sweat’s tenure with the Bears was relatively short, spanning just nine games. During this time, he made an impact with 25 tackles, 14 quarterback hits, and six sacks. When considering his overall performance, encompassing both his time with Chicago and the Commanders, Sweat’s numbers stand at an impressive 57 tackles, 25 quarterback hits, and 12.5 sacks.

Despite Montez Sweat’s contributions, the Bears found themselves ranked 31st in the league in terms of total sacks, totaling just 30. However, there was a silver lining as Chicago witnessed a substantial improvement on the defensive front, securing the 12th rank in the league by limiting opponents to an average of 324.2 yards per game.

This marked a notable upgrade from the 2022 season when the Bears ranked 29th, conceding an average of 375.9 yards per game.

The prospect of adding Chase Young to their roster would provide the Bears with another explosive asset on the defensive side of the field. While the dynamic duo of Montez Sweat and Chase Young didn’t yield the desired results in Washington, reuniting them in Chicago for the 2024 season could potentially form a formidable frontline capable of unsettling any opposition.

With financial resources at their disposal, the Bears could be poised for an exciting offseason, eyeing a promising defensive partnership in Sweat and Young.
