Could Russell Wilson end up with the Patriots? One NFL Insider weighs in

After all the drama and controversy this past season, the New England Patriots will be looking for a franchise quarterback for the 2024 season.

And they could potentially look at one veteran according to an NFL Insider.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler spoke with numerous sources throughout the league about Russell Wilson and what could be next for the Denver Broncos quarterback. One possibility that was quickly mention is the Patriots.

Could Russell Wilson join the Patriots? Weighing pros, cons

He explained that the Patriots “need” both a veteran and a draft pick for the quarterback position. So a Super Bowl champion and nine-time Pro Bowler would certainly provide a rookie quarterback with the perfect person to learn from.

And Fowler also didn’t hold back when comparing Wilson to Mac Jones, saying that is “Wilson is better than those quarterbacks,” which included Jones.

Wilson is expected to be on another team next season after all the drama at the end of the year in Denver. In 2022, Wilson signed a five-year, $245 million contract extension with the Broncos, but things did not end well after his second year with the team.

In Week 17, Denver head coach Sean Payton elected to bench Wilson and start Jarrett Stidham (a former Patriot) instead. And all of this happened while the Broncos were still in the playoff hunt. Much of this drama was said to be caused by Wilson refusing to move back his injury guarantee in his contract.

And they followed through with that. So now it’s clear Wilson will not be a Bronco for much longer.

Across his 12 years in the league, Wilson has 3,668 completions for 43,653 passing yards and 334 passing touchdowns, along with 981 carries for 5,307 rushing yards and 29 rushing touchdowns. This season alone, Wilson had 297 completions for 3,070 passing yards and 26 passing touchdowns. He also totaled 80 caries for 341 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.

While Fowler listed a few other possibilities for Wilson to land next season, the Patriots were a “sleeper” that he could see happening. Let’s see if the organization agrees.
