Various Insiders Hint At Chicago Cubs Potentially Signing Multiple Stars

The Chicago Cubs are reportedly still ready to make more moves this offseason with the chance they sign multiple star players.

Various Insiders Hint At Chicago Cubs Potentially Signing Multiple Stars - Sports Illustrated Inside The Cubs

For much of the offseason, the Chicago Cubs were being viewed as having the worst winter out of any team.

They were the last team to add a player to their 40-man roster and had not delivered on the proclamation they were going to aggressively add pieces to build a contending roster.

But, there was still time for the Cubs to make moves before the 2024 season started and they were able to make their first splash when signing Japanese star pitcher Shota Imanaga to a reasonable contract.

After that, Jed Hoyer made a trade to land the Los Angeles Dodgers’ No. 2 overall prospect in a move that makes them younger and potentially addresses one of their future needs.

While this could be viewed as a solid offseason, it wouldn’t quite be what Chicago had hinted at when it started.

However, various insiders have stated they don’t expect the Cubs to be done in the free agency market and think they could still sign multiple stars.

In an appearance on MLB Network Radio, Eduardo Perez discussed the names who have been linked to Chicago like Cody Bellinger, Matt Chapman, Rhys Hoskins, Josh Hader and Jordan Montgomery.

“Right now, I think they’re negotiating with all. I think that interest that’s out there is real. I would not be surprised if the Chicago Cubs would end up with three of the five names that we just mentioned,” he said.

Three of the five players here would be an absolute haul and would certainly live up to, and exceed, the expectations this front office set after the 2023 season.

But, how willing would Hoyer and this ownership group be to hand out the type of money it would take to land this many stars?

That’s where things get a little cloudy.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic also mentioned many of those names that have been swirling in connection to the Cubs and reiterated something similar about who they could sign.

“However, the Cubs also remain engaged in negotiations with Jordan Montgomery, Bellinger, Matt Chapman and Rhys Hoskins, and I’d be surprised if they don’t land one or two of them in addition to Imanaga,” he wrote.

With them already getting Imanaga, their rotation needs are seemingly taken care of, unless they still are worried about Justin Steele continuing the solid start he’s had to his career.

Jon Heyman went on 670 The Score and discussed the position players who Chicago seem to want as well.

“But certainly they’re in on all three, I wouldn’t be shocked if they got two of them, I would be shocked if they didn’t get at least one of them,” he stated.

Again, these are three separate insiders with sources around the league who believe the Cubs are still going to be active this winter and land the stars they proclaimed they would get.

So, while Chicago’s offseason certainly started out being extremely disappointing, they could be a team who improved their roster the most if these reports come true.
