Insider details what Giants badly wanted in NFL Draft

ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on Monday that the New York Giants weren’t, in fact, looking at a potential replacement for quarterback Daniel Jones during the 2024 NFL Draft.

On Tuesday, both ESPN’s Jordan Raanan and Mike Reiss had different insight into that report.

Raanan and Reiss wrote that the G-Men wanted to trade up with the New England Patriots to acquire the No. 3 overall pick and selected North Carolina’s Drake Maye. The Patriots ended up holding onto the pick and chose Maye as their presumed franchise signal-caller.
Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News discussed the situation on Wednesday morning and agreed with Raanan’s and Reiss’ reports.

After not selecting a quarterback during the draft, New York has Drew Lock lined up as Jones’ backup and last season’s cult hero Tommy DeVito slated as the third stringer.

Lock agreed to a one-year, $5M contract with the Giants in March.

Jones is two years removed from a career-best 2022 campaign, during which he produced 22 total touchdowns (seven rushing) against just five interceptions and posted a career-high 92.5 passer rating. He signed a massive four-year, $160M contract extension in March 2023 but struggled mightily last season.

Danny Dimes missed Weeks 6, 7 and 8 due to a neck injury and then suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his return to action in Week 9. Jones finished his fifth season with a career-high 67.5 completion percentage but just 909 passing yards, two touchdowns, six interceptions and a career-worst 70.5 passer rating.

Big Blue is expecting the 2019 first-round pick to be fully ready by training camp.
