New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton has been one of the better wide receivers on the team over the last few seasons. Sources told ESPN and New York Giants ESPN writer Jordan Raanan that:

“Giants WR Darius Slayton, in the final year of his current deal, has not reported to voluntary offseason workouts this week as he seeks a contract extension, sources told ESPN. Slayton led Giants in receiving this past season, and four of past 5 years.”

This is a very risky move for Darius Slayton for various reasons. One of the reasons why this is risky is because the Giants own the sixth pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and they could be drafting their future number one wide receiver.

Another reason why he could be doing this is that maybe he has inside information about the Giants drafting a quarterback and potentially moving on from Daniel Jones, but we will see. Slayton last season caught 50 passes for 770 yards receiving and four touchdowns and averaged 15.4 yards per reception.

He did not have over 1,000 yards and yet wants a new contract. The question is, what kind of contract is he looking for? If the New York Giants draft one of the three top wide receivers next week, Slayton will not be paid like a number one wide receiver at all.

The New York Giants Could Trade Darius Slayton If He Wants Big Money

Is it possible that Giants general manager Joe Schoen could trade Slayton if he wants too much money? They didn’t pay Xavier McKinney and Saquon Barkley big money this offseason, so they decided to let both of them walk in free agency.

This could be a situation where Slayton gets traded for a mid or late-round pick. He is 27 years old and looking for his one contract where he can get a good amount of money for himself. The question is, who wants to give a lot of money to a number two or three wide receiver?

There will be teams that could use him who need wide receiver depth. The Buffalo Bills are one of the teams that could use help at the wide receiver position and so could the Kansas City Chiefs, but no one should be trying to help Kansas City at this point.

In all honesty, it is just silly for Darius Slayton to be holding out looking for a new contract with the Giants. However, this holdout could wind up costing him sooner rather than later.
